1. How can I use the Detroit Green Map?

The Detroit Green Map can be used to: Find a green business/organization to visit, learn about, collaborate with, etc. Find a green employer/employee. Find green projects within the city (i.e. recycled art, green murals, etc.) Build a network with other green thinkers in the city. Simply put, the Detroit Green Map can have endless uses and possibilities! Go explore!

2. Who can use the Detroit Green Map?

The Detroit Green Map can be used by anyone and everyone interested in learning about and promoting the Detroit green economy.

3. What does "Green" mean?

Within the context of the Detroit Green Map Project, “green” refers to operations, practices, and values that support: environmental protection; socially just and more equitable hiring of Detroiters within Detroit; advancement of renewable energy generation and technology implementation; and sustainable resource use for responsible material sourcing, consumption reduction, and end-of-life reuse and recycling.

4. What is a “green job?”

Any job in which workers can help make their establishment's policies and processes more environmentally friendly or use fewer natural resources. These workers can research, develop, and/or use technologies and practices to lessen the environmental impact of their establishment, or train the establishment's workers or contractors in these technologies and practices. 5. Why should I be concerned with Green Businesses?

To help make Detroit a greener city with more jobs for Detroit residents and its surrounding neighbors. By doing this, we are improving quality of life for all and creating a more sustainable community.

6. How can I get involved with the Detroit Green Economy?

You can purchase green products and services from green businesses on the map either online or in person. You can donate to nonprofit organizations that work to create jobs and promote sustainability, and/or you can educate yourself to enter a green career. By spreading the word about the Detroit Green Map, you are also growing the Detroit Green Economy!

7. What is the difference between the Detroit Green Map and the DGSA Pledge Map?

The Detroit Green Map includes businesses/organizations that promote the Detroit green economy. The DGSA Pledge Map highlights those businesses/organizations that make the additional commitment to hire qualified Detroit residents as their business grows. Pledge signers are active members of the Detroit Green Skills Alliance (DGSA). In the Alliance, green businesses work together to grow the green economy of Detroit, addressing shared challenges related to consumer education, financing, policy, training and staffing. The group meets regularly and has four active Solutions Teams.

8. Who are “Members?”

Members are the businesses/organizations that have signed the Detroit Green Map Pledge, and therefore have joined the Detroit Green Skills Alliance. Click here to see the pledge.

9. How can I become a Detroit Green Skills Alliance member?

Sign the pledge and email debra.rowe@liveunitedsem.org to be informed of upcoming Green Skills Alliance meetings.

10. Can anyone sign the Detroit Green Map Pledge?

Yes, as long as you are willing to be true to the pledge and get involved with the Detroit Green Skills Alliance. Businesses must have projects or conduct business in Detroit to be featured on the DGSA Pledge Map.

11. What does it mean to take the pledge?

Complete the pledge form and you will be contacted with more information once your pledge commitment is received.

12. Why should I take the pledge?

To help make Detroit a greener city with more jobs for Detroit residents. By doing this, we are improving quality of life for all and creating a more sustainable community.

13. What are the benefits to signing the Detroit Green Map Pledge?

Members (i.e. organizations that sign the pledge) gain access to education, marketing, policy, financing and other resources that help their business grow.

14. I have a green site to suggest in the Metro Detroit area. Can I add it to the Detroit Green Map? (How?)

Yes, site suggestions can be sent to detroitgreenmap@gmail.com. Businesses/Organizations that would like to become Detroit Green Skills Alliance members and join the DGSA Pledge Map can opt to sign the pledge when signing up to become a featured business. Businesses must have projects or conduct business in Detroit to be featured on the DGSA Pledge Map.

15. Does Detroit Green Map organize tours?

Not at this moment, but we share our information with touring companies so they can create their own green tours. We encourage you to create your own tour by visiting a combination of the sites on the maps.
